High Fidelity (by Nick Horny)

When it comes to humour laced with caustic wit and eye-burningly accurate observations on everything from puberty to religion and back again covering every subject under the Sun, Hornby is the master. Accessible to everyone, High Fidelity is just one of his masterpieces (though in many people’s opinions it has to rank as one of the best).
Based in the UK and telling the story of an ordinary man who loves his record collection more than life itself, High Fidelity can only be described as a stonker of a book. The writing is tight and fun. The sentences are easy for anyone to read. The paragraphs are all excellent examples of what happens when a great writer takes on a subject that burns deep in all our hearts. One that we can’t escape from, Love.
As with all Hornby’s work, High Fidelity begins as fun and reaches tragic highs and lows along the way. That’s to say that by the time you’ve finished High Fidelity, you’ve retraced your childhood mistakes, your successes, the things you should never have done and the things you didn’t have the guts to do. This is why Hornby’s work will last: rather than just being entertainment, his fiction belongs to a small category of books which are so much more than the sum of their parts. Hornby can write about anything he likes, it would seem, and it comes out with the same winning appeal. What’s next for him? Who knows? A manual on fuel storage ? Or something else we never would have expected? I for one am looking forward to finding out.
